I have spent many vacations in Mexico, San Miguel De’Allende mostly, and the most revered holiday besides mothers day is the day of the dead. It is celebrated from October 1 to November 2 honoring and celebrating the life of loved ones who have passed. Each grave stone is covered with real flowers, fake flowers being disrespectful, and a plate of the person’s favorite food is placed in front of the headstone. I have photos of cemeteries and they are spectacular. The Catrina doll is the symbol of the day. They are tall beautifully colored female skeleton dolls placed on mantles as decoration during the festival.
It is not celebrated here because, much like Christmas, it has been highly commercialized and has lost its meaning. However, every other country in the Catholic world celebrates this sacred day of our lost loved ones. Memorial day was originally for veterans, not everyone…as it is today.
Nice display, Janice. Love the colors and set up.
